Precipitating cross-reactions among pneumococcal types.

چکیده

Data accumulated over many years are brought together on cross-reactions of 46 among the more than 80 pneumococcal serological types, with the idea of correlating cross-reactions with the structures of the relevant type-specific capsular polysaccharides, insofar as these have been determined. The precipitin reaction was carried out with the polysaccharides and antibodies raised in horses, rabbits, and a mule. Quantitative values (micrograms of antibody nitrogen per milliliter of antiserum at 0 to 1 degree C) are given in many instances and discussed, together with arbitrary qualitative data, in terms of the known structures of the polysaccharides. Some precise relationships are uncovered, and an attempt is made to determine why some of the cross-reactions are reciprocal and why others are only unilateral.

Characterization of the cross-reaction between type 19F(19) and 19A(57) pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides: compositional analysis and immunological relation determined with rabbit typing antisera.

The immunological relation, physicochemical characteristics, and chemical composition of type 19F(19) and 19A(57) within the cross-reactive group 19 pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides were studied. By using rabbit hyperimmune diagnostic antisera in agglutination, immunodiffusion, quantitative precipitation, and absorption assays, extensive cross-antigenicity and cross-immunogenicity were dem...

Genetic diversity of pneumococcal surface protein A in invasive pneumococcal isolates from Korean children, 1991-2016

Pneumococcal surface protein A (PspA) is an important virulence factor of pneumococci and has been investigated as a primary component of a capsular serotype-independent pneumococcal vaccine. Thus, we sought to determine the genetic diversity of PspA to explore its potential as a vaccine candidate. Among the 190 invasive pneumococcal isolates collected from Korean children between 1991 and 2016...

Are the enzyme immunoassays for antibodies to pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides serotype specific?

The specificity of antibody binding to pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides (Pnc PSs) measured by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) was studied by inhibition of antibody binding by homologous and heterologous PSs. We found extensive cross-reactivity of antibody binding to type 6B, 19F, and 23F PSs but not to type 14 PS, even after treatment with cell wall PS (CPS). The cross-reactive antibody was highl...

Cross-reactivity of antibodies to type 6B and 6A polysaccharides of Streptococcus pneumoniae, evoked by pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, in infants.

Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 6B and 6A are important causes of infections, yet only 6B is included in current vaccines. It is, therefore, crucial to evaluate whether functional antibodies are produced against both types after vaccination. Concentration and opsonophagocytic activity (OPA) of antibodies to 6B and 6A polysaccharides were determined in serum samples from infants immunized wit...

Distribution of pneumococcal surface protein A families 1 and 2 among Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates from children in finland who had acute otitis media or were nasopharyngeal carriers.

PspA is a structurally variable surface protein important to the virulence of pneumococci. PspAs are serologically cross-reactive and exist as two major families. In this study, we determined the distribution of PspA families 1 and 2 among pneumococcal strains isolated from the middle ear fluid (MEF) of children with acute otitis media and from nasopharyngeal specimens of children with pneumoco...
